TNAU Signs MoA with Start-ups and Innovators for Biotech Research

TNAU's Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology signed MoAs with two start-ups and two innovators on October 3, 2024, to facilitate research activities in the newly established Biotech Council.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore has taken a significant step towards advancing biotechnology research by signing Memorandums of Agreement (MoA) with two start-up companies and two innovators. The agreements were signed on October 3, 2024, at the newly established Biotech Council for Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology (CoEB).

Dr. N. Senthil, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology & CPMB&B at TNAU, signed the MoAs on behalf of the Biotech Council. The partnering entities include Arirang Biotech Private Limited from Kanchipuram, Sakthi Fertilizers Company from Namakkal, and two student innovators, Arunkumar Madhavan and Dhivvya Bhalan from KIT.

The signing ceremony was presided over by Dr. V. Geethalakshmi, Vice-Chancellor of TNAU. Other notable attendees included Dr. M.K. Kalarani, Director of Crop Management, Dr. E. Kokiladevi, Professor & Head of the Department of Plant Biotechnology, and Dr. S. Mohan Kumar, Professor & Project Director (CoEB).

The CoEB, housed in a newly constructed 1.06 lakh square feet building, is designed to foster public-private partnerships in biotechnology research. The facility boasts state-of-the-art laboratories for proteomics and metabolomics research, along with molecular biology labs, a cold room, server room, tissue culture facilities, and a conference hall.

The primary focus of the research conducted at the CoEB will be on developing super-active enzymes, biomolecules, bio-based products, hormones for fruit ripening, plant growth stimulants, and other bio-inputs. These innovations are expected to bring significant commercial benefits to farmers.

This collaboration between TNAU and the private sector marks a crucial step in bridging the gap between academic research and practical applications in agriculture. By providing cabin space and advanced facilities to start-ups and innovators, TNAU aims to accelerate the development of cutting-edge biotechnology solutions for the agricultural sector.
