Coimbatore: The body of Padma Shri Pappammal, who passed away due to health issues at the age of 110, has been kept for public homage at her residence in Thekkampatti village near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district. Since morning, members of the public have been paying their last respects to the departed soul.

Rangammal, known as Pappammal, hailed from Thekkampatti village near Mettupalayam. Her husband, Ramasamy Mudaliar, had passed away 18 years ago. As the couple had no children, Pappammal had been living with her sister Nanjammal's family.

Passionate about agriculture from a young age, Pappammal practiced organic farming. She continued farming even after crossing 100 years of age. Recognizing her dedication to agriculture, the Central Government honored her with the Padma Shri award in 2021.

Recently, at the age of 109, she was also conferred with the Tamil Nadu government's Periyar Award. Due to her advanced age and health issues, her granddaughter Kamalam and daughter Jayasudha received the award on her behalf.
