Four arrested for sophisticated gold bullion fraud in Coimbatore

Four individuals, including a minor, were arrested in Coimbatore for defrauding a Thanjavur-based jeweler of 1 kg gold bullion worth ₹60 lakh through an elaborate scheme on September 11.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore police have arrested four individuals, including a minor, for orchestrating a sophisticated fraud involving 1 kg of gold bullion worth approximately ₹60 lakh. The incident unfolded on September 11, targeting a jeweler from Pattukottai, Thanjavur district.

Harishankar, the victim and a jeweler from Pattukottai, received a call from a person identifying himself as Chandrasekar. The caller expressed interest in purchasing gold bullion, claiming to have substantial cash on hand. Chandrasekar instructed Harishankar to bring 1 kg of gold bullion to Papampatti in the Sulur area on September 11.

Upon reaching the designated location, Harishankar received another call from Chandrasekar, who now claimed to be unwell. Chandrasekar informed that his manager, Rajkumar, would handle the transaction instead. Rajkumar met Harishankar, collected the gold bullion, and then made an excuse about his vehicle breaking down. He told Harishankar to proceed to Lakshmi Mill area and contact him later.

When Harishankar tried to reach Rajkumar from Lakshmi Mill area, the phone was switched off. Realizing he had been duped, Harishankar filed a complaint at the Sulur Police Station.

The police formed special teams to investigate the case. Utilizing CCTV footage and with assistance from the Cyber Crime division, they identified the culprits as Babu (53), Naveen Kumar (25), Prabhu (25), and a minor, all hailing from Erode district.

On September 13, the police arrested all four individuals and recovered the stolen 1 kg gold bullion. The elaborate scheme involved multiple participants and careful planning, showcasing a new modus operandi in gold-related crimes in the region.

This incident serves as a cautionary tale for jewelers and gold traders in Coimbatore and surrounding areas, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and security measures when conducting high-value transactions.
