BHUTA Alleges Violation of Statute Norms in Continuation of Two College Principals in Bharathiar University Syndicate

BHUTA claims two college principals are improperly continuing as Syndicate members at Bharathiar University, citing violations of UGC regulations and ethical concerns. The issue raises questions about statutory compliance.

Coimbatore: The Bharathiar University Teachers' Association (BHUTA) has raised serious allegations regarding the continuation of two college principals as members of the Bharathiar University Syndicate. The association claims that these continuations violate statutory norms and University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations.

BHUTA secretary N. Umadevi stated that the current statutory structure of the university does not allow for a principal of a self-financing college to continue as a Syndicate Member after superannuation. She pointed out that one of the principals in question had retired in January this year, yet continues to serve on the Syndicate.

"The continuation of the principal in the post seriously violates statutory provision of the BU Act and Statute 1981," Umadevi said. She further cited a Government Order from the Higher Education Department dated January 11, 2021, which affirms the UGC regulations on the appointment of principals in self-financing colleges.

The association's concerns extend to a second college head serving on the Syndicate. BHUTA claims that this individual is currently under investigation by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. In their petition to the Registrar, BHUTA argued that this college head is not "ethically" qualified to be a Syndicate member due to the ongoing investigation.

These allegations raise questions about the adherence to statutory norms and ethical standards within the university's governing body. BHUTA's representation to the Registrar underscores the importance of maintaining integrity and compliance with regulations in academic institutions.

The university administration has not yet responded to these allegations. The situation continues to develop as the academic community awaits clarification on these issues affecting the governance of Bharathiar University.
