Monsoon Alert: Entry to Velliangiri Hills Suspended Until Further Notice

In view of the approaching Southwest Monsoon, the Forest Department has imposed a temporary ban on trekking to the Velliangiri Hills near Coimbatore from tomorrow, citing safety concerns.

Coimbatore:

Amid the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, an inter-departmental review meeting was recently held at the Coimbatore District Collector’s Office, where officials discussed safety arrangements based on the recommendations of the District Forest Officer regarding trekking activities at the Velliangiri Hills.

With heavy rainfall expected in the hill regions over the coming days, authorities have decided to temporarily prohibit devotees from trekking the hills from May 13 onwards to ensure public safety.

Officials have also urged devotees planning to visit the hills from tomorrow morning not to proceed, as they will not be permitted to climb the mountain.

The Forest Department has warned that the hill paths become slippery and dangerous during the rainy season and advised the public not to violate the restriction order.

While the announcement has disappointed many devotees who had planned a spiritual trek during the summer season, officials stated that the decision was taken purely in the interest of public safety.
