Farmers Protest Against Horticulture Department's District-level Seminar in Udumalpet

Farmers in Udumalpet, Tiruppur district, staged a protest against a two-day district-level seminar organized by the Horticulture Department, citing lack of support and negligence in addressing their concerns.

Coimbatore: Tension prevailed in Udumalpet, Tiruppur district, as farmers staged a protest and besieged officials during a two-day district-level seminar organized by the Horticulture Department. The event, held at a private hall, faced strong opposition from local farmers who expressed their dissatisfaction with the department's activities.

The protesting farmers stated that they strongly condemn the seminar being conducted by the Horticulture Department. They alleged that for the past few months, the department has not provided any benefits to the farmers. The protesters claimed that information about the Tamil Nadu government's subsidy schemes does not reach farmers on time, and there is negligence in providing compensation for crop damages.

The farmers highlighted the specific issue of coconut wilt disease, which is prevalent in the Udumalpet, Gudimangalam, and Madathukulam areas. They expressed concern that coconut farming is on the verge of destruction, and the Horticulture Department has not taken appropriate measures or provided guidance to control the disease.

Another grievance raised by the farmers was the lack of field visits by officials when crop damages are reported. They demanded that Horticulture Department officials should conduct field inspections whenever farmers report crop damages.

The protest against the district-level seminar of the Horticulture Department in Udumalpet has created a significant stir in the region, highlighting the growing discontent among farmers regarding the department's functioning and support mechanisms.
