Bhavani River in Mettupalayam Experiences Third Day of Flooding

Heavy rainfall in Western Ghats causes Pillur Dam to reach 97 feet. Excess water released into Bhavani River, leading to third consecutive day of flooding in Mettupalayam on July 18.

Coimbatore: The Bhavani River in Mettupalayam is experiencing its third consecutive day of flooding on July 18 due to heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats region. The Pillur Dam has reached 97 feet, prompting authorities to release excess water into the river as a safety measure.

Officials are currently releasing 16,140 cubic feet of water per second through four sluice gates of the Pillur Dam, which is equivalent to the inflow the dam is receiving. This has resulted in the Bhavani River overflowing its banks and flooding the surrounding areas.

The continuous release of water has put residents along the Bhavani River banks on high alert. Local authorities have issued flood warnings to people living in low-lying areas near the river. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and follow safety instructions provided by the district administration.

The situation is being closely monitored by the district officials, who are prepared to take necessary actions to ensure the safety of the residents in the affected areas. The public is urged to stay away from the river banks and avoid attempting to cross the swollen river.
