Post-mortem Results of a Deceased Baby Elephant in Coimbatore Revealed

A baby elephant, aged 3 months, died in Coimbatore's Theppakadu Elephant Camp on June 28 after being separated from its herd and its health deteriorated despite treatment.

Coimbatore: Near Marudamalai, a female elephant aged around 40 was found in distress on May 30. Despite receiving treatment for five days by the forest department officials and being released back into the forest, it struggled with health issues.

Later, the infant elephant, only 3 months old that accompanied the adult female, wandered away and eventually joined another herd. However, the calf strayed again and was spotted wandering alone by the forest officials. Efforts to reunite the baby elephant with its mother failed, leading to the forest department transporting it to Theppakadu Elephant Camp in Mudumalai, under the care of forest officials since June 9.

The health of the baby elephant deteriorated and despite continuous treatment, it passed away on the night of June 28. The next day, June 29, veterinary post-mortem examination was conducted by the wildlife veterinary officer, which revealed that the calf had multiple ulcers in its intestines as part of the initial findings.
