Tamil Nadu Assembly passes unanimous resolution again for NEET Abolition Amid Controversies

Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution urging Union Government to scrap NEET, favoring class 12 marks for medical admissions. Regional parties support amidst NEET exam controversies.

Coimbatore: In a significant move, the Tamil Nadu Assembly, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, unanimously passed a resolution seeking the abolition of the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET). Amid a chaotic backdrop of the recent NEET-UG paper leak and the abrupt postponement of the NEET-PG examination, the resolution was tabled, earning support from multiple regional political entities including Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The call for scrapping NEET is driven by concerns over its fairness following discrepancies and controversies surrounding the exam. Notably, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP K. Kanimozhi echoed the sentiment in Delhi, advocating for Tamil Nadu's exemption from NEET, emphasizing the state's consistent stance against the exam's imposition. "The examination has proven to be unfair, heavily impacting students," stated Kanimozhi, highlighting the resolution passed in the state assembly, now pending presidential approval.

The 2024 NEET-UG Examination conducted on May 5 saw participation from over 23 lakh candidates across 4,750 centers globally, including 14 international cities. Despite the vast scale, issues including a perfect score achieved by 67 candidates sparked national outrage, prompting the Ministry of Education to form a committee seeking examination reforms and enhanced security measures for future tests.
