Judge Orders Inspection of Electric Crematorium at Isha Foundation in Coimbatore

In Coimbatore, a High Court judge ordered an on-site inspection of the electric crematorium at Isha Foundation's Kala Bhairava Mandapam, following a lawsuit filed by local resident S.N. Subramanian.

Coimbatore: A High Court judge has directed an immediate inspection of the electric cremation facility constructed by the Isha Foundation, named Kala Bhairava Mandapam, located in a residential area of Coimbatore. The directive comes after a local resident, S.N. Subramanian from Pooluvampatti village, filed a lawsuit demanding the removal of the facility citing improper location and potential public health risks.

The case, presided over by justices S.S. Sundar and N. Senthilkumar, recently progressed to active hearings. During the hearing, the petitioner's accusations were contested by Isha Foundation's legal representatives. The foundation asserted that the crematorium was established with proper permissions and does not affect the nearby residents as claimed in the lawsuit. Additionally, they argued that the petitioner had submitted a false address and demonstrated that no one resides at the alleged dwelling, which is merely a shed.

Senior counsel Wilson, representing the petitioner, argued that the crematorium adversely affects the locals and that it was built without adequate public consultation. In contrast, Isha's representative, senior counsel Vijay Narayan, countered that the facility has not yet begun operations and uses modern LPG technology for cremations with no emissions troubling the public due to high-altitude smoke vents.

Following the arguments, the judges ordered the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to conduct an on-site assessment of the cremation facility and submit a report. They further postponed the hearing of the case to June 26, awaiting the detailed report on the facility’s compliance and environmental impact.
