Precarious Living Conditions of Tribal Communities in Puliyankandi Due to Dilapidated Housing

In Puliyankandi, near Pollachi, over 40 Irular tribal families live in fear due to crumbling government-provided houses, posing serious risks to their safety, especially during the rainy season.

Coimbatore: Located at the foothills of Azhiyar near Pollachi, the Puliyankandi area is home to more than 40 families from the Irular tribe, who have resided there for generations, primarily engaged in menial labor for livelihood.

About 30 years ago, these families were provided with cluster houses by the government.

Over the years, these buildings have developed significant cracks, with concrete beams dislodging and collapsing, forcing families to live in fear for their lives.

The situation has deteriorated to the point where during every monsoon season, many families temporarily relocate to nearby school buildings or Anganwadi centers for shelter. According to the residents, these cluster houses were never properly maintained by the government after their construction. Today, the houses are in such a dilapidated state that sleeping peacefully at night is a challenge. The dislodged cement roof slabs pose a danger of injuries, and concerns about wild animals venturing close to their living areas add to the tribulations faced by these families.

The community members have expressed profound distress due to their living conditions and have urged the government to take immediate action to maintain and repair these homes safely.
