Conflict Between Police and Transport Workers Seen as Dangerous Indifference by DMK Government – MLA Vanathi Srinivasan

Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan highlights dangerous indifference by DMK Government in conflict between police and government transport workers, calling for resolution and legal compliance on May 25.

Coimbatore: In a recent statement, Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan critiqued DMK Government for its alleged indifference towards the escalating conflict between police personnel and government transport corporation employees. This issue came to light following an incident where a police officer, traveling from Nagercoil to Thoothukudi on a government bus, verbally sparred with a conductor over ticket issues, sparking statewide controversy.

According to MLA Srinivasan, the sight of police and transport workers, both critical components of government service, openly conflicting, shakes the foundation of government functionality and adds immense distress to the public. This incident underscores a larger issue—police are not entitled to free travel in government buses and must purchase tickets like any other citizen, as declared by transport officials.

Further complicating matters, this confrontation has evolved into a heated exchange with accusations of retaliatory fines against transport drivers and conductors, reported for various infractions. The MLA emphasizes that such reprisals are not just detrimental to departmental harmony but are also legally questionable.

MLA Vanathi Srinivasan strongly condemned the DMK government's passive stance on this matter, likening their enjoyment of the situation to spectating a conflict for amusement, which represents significant peril. She calls for immediate government intervention to establish harmony and enforce the law impartially, irrespective of one's department or status. Additionally, Chief Minister M K Stalin had previously promised free travel concessions for police in state buses, a promise that remains unfulfilled, contributing to ongoing tensions.

The discord between police and transport workers is indicative of a deeper systemic issue that requires not just the resolution of the current conflict but also a re-evaluation of how government departments interact and uphold the laws. Effective governance dictates that rules be applied equally, without the misuse of law for settling scores.

MLA Srinivasan's plea underscores the urgency for the State Government to act not only in resolving this conflict but also in ensuring that governmental promises, like concessions, are fulfilled to maintain order and public trust.
