Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Sexual Assault on an 8-year-old Girl in Coimbatore

A 47-year-old man from Seeranaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and fined Rs. 10,000 for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl on March 23, 2021. A compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs was also awarded to the victim.


Coimbatore: In a distressing incident, a local court has handed down a 20-year prison sentence to Dhandapani, a 47-year-old laborer from Seeranaickenpalayam, for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl. The assault occurred on March 23, 2021, when Dhandapani was working alone in a garden near Coimbatore where the young girl was present.

Following the report of the incident by the girl's parents, the police arrested Dhandapani under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The case was extensively handled by the POCSO Special Court in Coimbatore.

After thorough legal proceedings, the Presiding Judge Kulashekaran delivered the verdict on May 21, convicting Dhandapani and sentencing him to 20 years of imprisonment. Alongside the prison term, a fine of Rs. 10,000 was imposed. Additionally, the court has ordered a compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs to be paid to the victim, funded by the government. This decisive action highlights the judicial system's commitment to addressing and penalizing acts of sexual assault harshly.
