Two Children Recover from Rare Kawasaki Disease at Coimbatore Government Hospital

In Coimbatore, a three-month-old and a ten-month-old were treated for Kawasaki disease at a government hospital under the state's medical insurance scheme.

Coimbatore: In a remarkable instance of medical intervention, Coimbatore Government Hospital's pediatric department successfully treated two young children suffering from Kawasaki disease. The children, aged three months and ten months respectively, were admitted with persistent fevers and subsequently diagnosed with this rare condition.

Kawasaki disease, characterized by symptoms such as persistent fever, limb swelling, skin peeling, and neck stiffness, is known to potentially lead to severe heart complications if not treated promptly. Fortunately, the children received timely administration of immunoglobulin, valued at Rs. 1 lakh per patient, fully covered under the Tamil Nadu government's health insurance scheme.

The treatment, costing about Rs. 1 lakh per child, involves high doses of anti-inflammatory medication and was administered effectively by the hospital staff. As per hospital administration, over the past year, eight children affected by this disease received the life-saving treatment estimated around Rs. 8 lakhs in total, with all patients recovering well.

Both children have recently returned home in good health, marking a significant success in the treatment of Kawasaki disease within the state-funded healthcare framework. The medical team continues to monitor similar cases to provide immediate and effective treatments to affected children.
