Tamil Nadu Government Bans Import, Sale of 23 Dog Breeds; current owners mandated sterilisation

The Tamil Nadu Government mandates immediate sterilization for 23 specific dog breeds, and banning the import or sale of these breeds aiming to curb the rising incidents of dog attacks across the state. This order includes breeds like Rottweilers and Pitbulls.



The Tamil Nadu Government mandates immediate sterilization for 23 specific dog breeds, and banning the import or sale of these breeds aiming to curb the rising incidents of dog attacks across the state. This order includes breeds like Rottweilers and Pitbulls.

In response to increasing dog attacks in Tamil Nadu, the state government has issued a directive requiring the immediate sterilization of 23 specific dog breeds deemed aggressive and dangerous. This decision follows a tragic incident in Chennai on May 6, 2024, where two Rottweilers severely injured a five-year-old girl, heightening public fear and concern.

Among the breeds listed are Tosa Inu, Fila Brasileiro, American Bulldog, Kangal, Caucasian Shepherd, and others like Mastiffs and Terriers. These dogs, according to experts from the Department of Animal Husbandry under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, pose a significant threat to human safety due to their aggressive nature.

Effective immediately, import, breeding, and sale of these breeds, along with their hybrids, are prohibited. Current owners must ensure their dogs of these listed breeds undergo mandatory sterilization surgery to prevent breeding. Additionally, when taking these dogs to public spaces, it is compulsory to use a leash and muzzle, with specifications to ensure public safety.

Tamil Nadu Govt Regulates Dog Breeders:

🔹The dog owner must ensure their dog wears a leash and a protective mask when taking the dog outside to public places.

🔹The size of the leash should be equal to the dog's body width (at least 3 times the length) from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail.

🔹A good quality collar/shoulder harness for dog owners when taking their pets outside will make them safer for both the pet and the public.

This precautionary measure by the government aims to reduce potentially fatal interactions and ensure greater public safety while managing the behavior of these specific dog breeds.
