Female Elephant Killed in Train Collision Near Coimbatore

A female elephant, aged 25, was killed early this morning when hit by a train near Pannimadai, between Coimbatore and Palakkad. The Forest Department is investigating.


Coimbatore: In a tragic incident early today, a female elephant was killed when struck by the Chennai Express train while attempting to cross the tracks near Pannimadai area, situated between Coimbatore and Palakkad. Forest Department officials confirmed that the elephant, estimated to be about 25 years old, died on the spot. Authorities immediately launched an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the accident.



This isn't the first such incident in this region as it marks the second death of an elephant in just one month, pointing towards increasing wildlife-train conflicts in the area. Measures to prevent further such accidents are being discussed to safeguard the elephant corridors that intersect with railway lines. The Forest Department urges the railway authorities to consider implementing speed restrictions and awareness amongst train drivers to prevent future tragedies.
