Reckless Driving Leads to Public Intervention and Police Action near Sulur, Coimbatore

On January 24, 2024, A Tata Ace driver, found to be under the influence of alcohol, was confronted by the public and later detained by police near Sulur in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: A recent incident of reckless driving near Sulur, on the Trichy Road in Pappampatti division, led to public intervention and police action. A Tata Ace vehicle, driving erratically, caused alarm among motorcyclists who had to swerve out of the way to avoid collision. This prompted locals to stop the vehicle and confront the driver.

Upon arrival, the Sulur patrol police interrogated the driver, identified as 27-year-old Gautham from Coimbatore's Puliakulam area. It was found that Gautham, along with a friend, was in an inebriated state. The police conducted a breathalyzer test on Gautham, who initially responded with mockery, asking if it was a “magudi” (a wind instrument) to be played.

When the police attempted to photograph Gautham, he sarcastically suggested they search for his picture on Google. Eventually, he was taken to the Sulur Police Station. A medical examination confirmed Gautham was under the influence of alcohol, leading to his arrest for drunk driving. Despite the increased fine of INR 10,000 for drunk driving, incidents have been on the rise in the Trichy Road area.

This situation has caused concern among local commuters, who fear for their safety due to the increasing number of intoxicated drivers. The police are actively working to curb this trend through various measures.
