Strict deadline for completing projects in 15 suburban stations under ABSS: Chennai Division of Southern Railway

The Railway Board has given the nod for the division to engage a project supervision services agency (PSSA) for the completion of the work by the contractors before the deadline.

The Chennai division of Southern Railway has a strict deadline for completing the projects at the 15 suburban stations under the ABSS by December end. The railway officials are confident of completing the work in 4-6 months. The Railway Board has given the nod for the division to engage a project supervision services agency (PSSA) for the completion of the work by the contractors before the deadline.

PSSA is normally allotted for big projects of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and Metro. It is proposed to be deployed for the ABSS projects. The agency would supervise the work to be carried out by the contractors at all the railway stations in one go and give an update of the progress of the projects regularly.

Unlike other projects in which work would start at a place and proceed in phases, the the ABSS project contractors have been asked to carry out the demolition of old station buildings, ducting of cable networks, construction of facade and installation of roof in one go. The PSSA would play a vital role in the completion of the projects in four to six months.

Chennai division is the first to rope in the agency for the ABSS projects. The other divisions would also hire it. But there are concerns among rail passengers that this would lead to privatisation of railway services, and as a consequence, increased charges for them.
