DYFI protest against SBI clerical exam scheduled for Pongal day

The cadres of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a protest in front of the Head Post Office in Coimbatore, demanding that the date for the SBI Clerk exam scheduled for January 15 be postponed to a later date.

Coimbatore: Pongal is being celebrated by Tamils all over the world on January 15. The State Bank of India (SBI) has released a notification to conduct the clerical grade exams on Pongal day, thus upsetting the celebrations.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India cadres, who staged a protest in front of the Head Post Office in Coimbatore, demanded that the SBI management postpone and conduct the exam for clerk posts at a later date.

DYFI District Secretary Arjun led the protest and cadres raised slogans to the effect.

“Even as the Pongal festival is celebrated on January 14, 15 and 16 the exam should be postponed. More than 5,000 candidates have applied for more than 350 vacant posts in SBI branches in Tamil Nadu” Arjun said

“The move is seen as inimical to the interests of Tamils. Conducting such competitive exams on festival days was earlier done by SSI, Railways” the protesters alleged.

The protesters also condemned that in Central government-run schools, no holiday has been given for “Maatu Pongal” which is against Tamils.
