'CCTV cameras to be installed at 400 places across Coimbatore district to prevent theft and dacoity:' SP V Badrinarayanan

SP V Badrinarayanan also encouraged the public to come forward to install CCTV cameras in homes to prevent such thefts. He also reiterated that action under the Goondas Act would be recommended against those who continue to indulge in criminal activities.



Coimbatore: Jewellery worth Rs. 3.50 crore has thus far been recovered from thieves from the outskirts of Coimbatore and handed over to the concerned owners. District Superintendent of Police, V Badrinarayanan said that FIRs have been registered for 475 offences and action has been taken for 48 offences.

Sandhya, a resident of Anna Nagar in Neelambur under Sulur police limits in Coimbatore district was robbed of six sovereigns of gold jewellery, a few days ago.

Similarly, two sovereigns of gold ornaments were robbed from the house of Gopu, a resident of Kadampadi, and two sovereigns of gold jewellery was stolen from the house of Ramesh, a resident of Mayilampatti Thanam Nagar.

According to the police, 22 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 1.60 lakh in cash were stolen from the house of Rajendran, a resident of Appanayakanpatti.

While the Sulur police had registered a separate case for each robbery and were investigating these thefts, after examining the CCTV footage from the area, the police arrested Mubarak Ali of Sundarapuram in Coimbatore, Jeganathan of Peelamedu and Saravanan of Thottipalayam. A total of 32 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 3 lakh in cash were seized from them.



At an event organized by the police, all the recovered jewellery was handed back to the rightful owners. The District Superintendent of Police, V Badrinarayanan handed over the jewellery and money to the concerned persons.



Speaking to the media later, SP V Badrinarayana said, "So far, jewellery worth Rs.3.50 crore has been recovered from those involved in the thefts in the outskirts of Coimbatore and handed over to the concerned persons. FIRs have been registered for 475 offences and action has been taken for 48 offences.

Also, 694 missing mobile phones in Coimbatore district have been recovered with the help of the Cyber Crime Police and handed over to the concerned authorities. In October alone, the police had recovered 300 sovereigns of jewellery. This includes incidents of theft in Karamadai, Vadugapalayam, Pollachi and Sulur."

"It is proposed to install 400 CCTV cameras at important places in Coimbatore district to prevent theft, robbery and dacoity. CCTV cameras have already been installed at some important places. If those who are arrested in cases of theft and dacoity go to jail and come out on bail, and are once again involved in criminal activities, action will be recommended against them under the Goondas Act.

Similarly, a list of those who continue to commit crimes is being prepared. The Special Cell Police are keeping a close watch on those involved in crime incidents. Steps will also be taken to recover the jewellery lost in the theft incidents in the past as soon as possible. A special team will be formed to recover all the jewellery. The public should also come forward to install CCTV cameras in homes to prevent such thefts," he reiterated.
