Following Tamil Nadu’s announcement that driving licences and vehicle Registration Certificates (RCs) will be issued digitally from September 15, contract workers involved in printing and related services at RTO offices have sought alternative employment within the Transport Department.
Coimbatore: Contract workers engaged in printing driving licences and vehicle Registration Certificates (RCs) at Regional Transport Offices have appealed to the Tamil Nadu government for alternative employment following the State’s decision to introduce digital versions of the documents.
In an announcement made in the Assembly on September 2, the government said digital driving licences and RCs would be introduced across Tamil Nadu from September 15. Applicants will be able to download the documents online, while those who pass the driving test will receive their digital driving licence on the same day.
The workers, associated with Elcot and Bonton services, said they have been involved in licence and RC printing-related work at RTO and other transport offices since 1998. They have now expressed concern that the shift to digital documents could affect their livelihood as the existing printing-related work is reduced.
In their representation, the workers said several of them have depended on this work for many years and appealed to the authorities to provide them with suitable employment in another role within the Transport Department.
The new digital system is aimed at reducing delays in receiving physical cards and allowing citizens to download their documents online. The digital documents will also carry QR codes for electronic verification, while users will have the option to download and print them if required.
