The Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the murder of a Class 7 student in Irugur, Coimbatore, and has issued a notice seeking a detailed investigation report from the police before June 15.
Coimbatore: The murder of a 13-year-old boy, allegedly beaten to death by two minors, has sent shockwaves across the state. While police have arrested two minors in connection with the case and remanded them to a juvenile reform home in Coimbatore, the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Commission has now taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought a transparent and detailed investigation.
The victim, Ritheesh (13), was the son of a sanitation worker from Irugur in Coimbatore. He had reportedly discontinued his studies midway while studying in Class 7 at a school in the area.
On May 15, Ritheesh had gone fishing in a canal near Irugur along with two of his friends studying in Classes 10 and 8.
According to police, a quarrel broke out among them during which the Class 10 student allegedly attacked Ritheesh on the head with a bottle and later killed him by hitting him with a stone. Police also stated that the Class 10 and Class 8 students allegedly attempted to mislead others by claiming that Ritheesh had been abducted by unknown persons.
Following investigations, police arrested the Class 10 student in connection with the murder and the Class 8 student for allegedly assisting him. Both were later produced before a court and lodged in a juvenile reform home in Coimbatore.
The incident has triggered widespread shock across Coimbatore district. Social activists have expressed concern over students engaging in violent crimes at such a young age and stressed the need for parents and teachers to provide proper guidance and counselling from an early age.
Meanwhile, the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Commission has decided to conduct a suo motu inquiry into the incident. In this connection, a notice has been issued to the Singanallur Assistant Commissioner of Police seeking an explanation.
Commission member Selvakumar stated that the murder of a Class 7 student by fellow students was deeply shocking. He said the accused students not only committed the murder but also attempted to conceal the crime by making the victim’s parents believe he had been kidnapped.
He further said that police have been directed to submit a detailed inquiry report by June 15 next month, covering the motive behind the murder, the reason for the dispute among the students, and the circumstances that led them to commit such a grave crime.
Further action will be initiated after the inquiry report is received, he added.
