Coimbatore Marks Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th Birth Anniversary with 157-Cyclist Rally for Drug-Free Society

Coimbatore: 157 cyclists took part in a rally through Coimbatore on Friday to mark the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, promoting sports, discipline, national unity and the need for a drug-free society.

The 'Gandhi Jayanti Cycling Awareness 2026' rally aimed to encourage people, particularly youngsters, to take up sports and physical activity while creating awareness against drug abuse. Participants ranged from six-year-old children to 75-year-old senior citizens, with women and Coimbatore City Police officials also joining the rally to spread awareness.

The cycling rally began at Nava India in Coimbatore and proceeded along Avinashi Road towards SITRA, Neelambur and Karumathampatti. The cyclists then returned along the same route to the Sports Hive area at Nava India.

Covering around 50 kilometres, the rally lasted nearly two hours and attracted attention with enthusiastic participation from people across different age groups.

Speaking about the initiative, social activist and cyclist G.D. Vishnuram said the rally was organised to take messages of national unity, the spirit of freedom, discipline and the fight against drug abuse to the public. He said selfless patriotism should form the foundation of a prosperous nation and stressed the need for the present generation to uphold unity and discipline.

Vishnuram also called for collective efforts to create a drug-free society to protect future generations, noting that sports and physical activity can help young people develop confidence and discipline. He said the cycling rally was also aimed at honouring the spirit of the freedom fighters who worked for the country's independence and creating awareness about the need for everyone to come together to build a prosperous nation.
