Coimbatore: A series of wild elephant deaths reported in the Coimbatore Forest Division in recent weeks has raised concern among forest officials and wildlife enthusiasts. In the latest incident, a male wild elephant was found dead in the Boluvampatti Range on Wednesday evening.
Forest Department field staff came across the carcass during a routine patrol at around 5.30 p.m. on September 30. The elephant was found lying on the dry bed of a stream at Kariyampadugai, within the Poondi South forest beat.
The carcass was in a decomposed condition, while the elephant’s tusks were found intact.
The Forest Department officials initiated the necessary procedures, and a team of veterinarians conducted a post-mortem examination on Thursday in the presence of Forest Department personnel and representatives of non-governmental organisations.
Based on the post-mortem examination, the elephant was estimated to have been more than 40 years old. Samples were collected from the carcass and sent for forensic and other examinations to establish the reason for death and timeline.
The Forest Department recovered the elephant’s tusks and secured them as part of the investigation.
The carcass was left in the forest for scavengers.
