Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation is set to launch a month-long awareness campaign from October 5 to encourage residents to harvest rainwater and strengthen groundwater resources across the city ahead of the Northeast monsoon. The campaign, titled "Catch the Rain Campaign," will continue for one month, with a series of awareness programmes planned to highlight the importance of rainwater conservation. The Corporation expects significant rainfall during the upcoming Northeast monsoon and has planned measures to ensure that the rainwater is effectively conserved. As part of the campaign, officials will undertake door-to-door visits across all 100 wards in the Corporation's five zones. During these visits, officials will inspect rainwater harvesting infrastructure and create awareness among residents about the need to maintain and use such systems effectively. The Corporation has also urged commercial establishments, educational institutions and other buildings to install proper rainwater harvesting systems and ensure that rainwater collected from rooftops is not allowed to go to waste. Where required, the Corporation, volunteers and social responsibility funds will be used to facilitate the creation of rainwater harvesting infrastructure. The month-long initiative will also feature awareness programmes at locations frequented by the public. The Corporation has further appealed to owners of buildings that already have rainwater harvesting systems to ensure they are properly maintained. Pipes, filters, recharge pits and collection structures must remain in good condition so that rainwater can flow into the ground without obstruction.Urging residents to follow the Corporation's rainwater harvesting guidelines and install suitable systems in their buildings, the civic body called for collective participation in water conservation efforts. "Today's rainwater is tomorrow's drinking water" and "A raindrop from the sky is a drop of life for the soil" are the messages highlighted by the Corporation as part of its appeal.
