Coimbatore:Indigo Airlines at Coimbatore broke its own record by air lifting 7.3 tonnes of cargo, in a flight with 109 passengers on board.

Cargo handling is done both in the domestic and international sector at the Coimbatore International Airport. There are two types of flights namely, all cargo flights which are exclusively meant for cargo handling and the other is the passenger flights in which limited belly space is allotted for cargo.

Usually, passenger aircrafts, apart from accommodating the travellers' baggage, load a maximum of 3.5 to 4 tonnes of cargo. Recently, Indigo Airlines set a new record by air lifting 7.2 tons of cargo in a passenger flight in which more than 100 passengers were on board.

This was considered to be the first of its kind and hence it was declared as a new record. On Thursday night, however,Indigo airlines broke its own record. Flight number 6E 6985 which departed to Delhi with 109 passengers along with their baggage had a very limited belly space. In spite of the limited space, a total of 7,300 kilos or 7.3 tonnes of domestic cargo was successfully airlifted.

It is to be noted that this also adds up to the volume of domestic freight traffic figures.
