Coimbatore: Daily market traders submitted a petition to the District Collector seeking permission for resumption of trading in Anna Market.

At the Anna Market on Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore, vegetables from various towns are procured through agents and sold to wholesalers and retailers. With the lockdown imposed last March due to COVID-19, the market was later closed as some of the traders tested positive. Alternatively they were allowed to operate at GCT college premises in Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore with 190 shops there. Traders indulged in road roko as it was muddy due to recent rains. They were reassured by the police and assured that appropriate action would be taken.

Under the circumstances, more than 50 members of the Daily Market All Merchants' Welfare Association petitioned the District Collector, urging the corporation officials to inspect the Anna Market and take steps to allow them to resume business with all the guidelines and safety measures in place.

They further added that with 190 shops allowed to operate on the GCT premises, 176 people had set up shop here. As there are 400 shops in Anna Market and only 180 shops allowed to operate in the current scenario, they said that they will conduct business on a rotational basis at the Anna Market.
