Coimbatore Corporation flagged off 43 electric vehicles worth Rs 86 lakh for solid waste management at RS Puram Kalaiarangam on September 19, 2026, funded through Leap Green Energy Private Limited's social responsibility fund. Backward Classes Welfare Minister V Sampathkumar launched the vehicles in the presence of District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar, Singanallur MLA K S Sreekiri Prasad, and Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja. Each vehicle, chargeable in 3-4 hours, can travel 80-100 km and carry 500 kg of waste, aiding door-to-door segregation into wet, dry, sanitary, and special-care waste categories using color-coded bins.
Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation on September 19, 2026 flagged off 43 electric vehicles worth Rs 86 lakh for solid waste management operations, funded through the corporate social responsibility initiative of Leap Green Energy Private Limited.
The vehicles were launched at the RS Puram Corporation Kalaiarangam in the Western Zone in the presence of Backward Classes Welfare Minister V Sampathkumar, District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar, IAS, Singanallur MLA K S Sreekiri Prasad, and Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, IAS.
Speaking at the event, Minister Sampathkumar said the newly launched vehicles are designed to travel approximately 80 to 100 kilometers on a single charge of 3 to 4 hours. Each of the 43 vehicles can carry a load of up to 500 kg. Along with the vehicles, the Corporation was also provided with garbage bins for four-way waste segregation at the household level: green bins for wet waste, blue bins for dry waste, red bins for sanitary waste, and black bins for special-care waste, enabling residents to segregate waste before handing it over for collection.
Earlier in the day, the minister, along with the District Collector and the Corporation Commissioner, took part in the launch of a special anti-rabies vaccination camp for stray dogs, held at the same RS Puram Corporation Kalaiarangam.
The primary objective of the special anti-rabies vaccination camp for stray dogs is to make Coimbatore a rabies-free city by 2030. The vaccination drive is being carried out in line with the Tamil Nadu government's target of eliminating rabies across the state by 2030. Following the launch, Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja briefed the minister on the awareness activities being carried out among the public regarding rabies.
The events were attended by Corporation Deputy Commissioner R Saraswathi, City Chief Engineer Vijayakumar, City Health Officer Dr Subashkanthi, veterinarian Dr Varunkumar, Assistant Commissioner Narmadha, zonal health officers Gunasekaran and Radhakrishnan, Leap Green Energy Private Limited founder and Managing Director Devanand Vijayan, and other Corporation officials.
