Coimbatore: The E-pass system for all applicants to go from district to district came into effect in Tamil Nadu today. Subsequently, traffic congestion was observed at major check posts in Coimbatore.

The E-pass procedure was seen as the most strictly followed measure in the prevention of coronavirus spread. The announcement by the Tamil Nadu government that the districts in Tamil Nadu should be divided into 8 zones and that the E-pass should be made compulsory to move from a zone to another was met with great dissatisfaction.

However, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the relaxation of the E-pass from today as people continue to complain that passes are not available for any reason other than medical emergency, marriage, and death.

Following this, people have started going to other districts in vehicles with or without E-passes. As a result, a large number of vehicles gathered at the check post on the Coimbatore-Avinashi National Highway in the Thekkalur area. Only a few policemen are deployed in the checkposts making it difficult to control traffic.

A police official said people have taken to the roads in large numbers misinterpreting the government's announcement of E-pass relaxation from today. They pose the risk of increasing corona infections in Coimbatore. He said, "Unaware that they could only from today and only travel after securing the passes, they want to travel across the zonal borders. They have created a traffic snarl of about two kilometers. A number of them have just Aadhaar cards on them."
