As elephant play a crucial role in preserving our forests and ecosystem, protecting them is paramount. Despite the concerted efforts of the government, the dwindling population of elephants due to human negligence is alarming, opine environmentalists.

With no visitors permitted, the elephant day celebration at Topslip's Kozhikamuthi elephant camp, near Topslip, in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve was a low-key affair, today.

The 28 elephants maintained in the camps were fed special food and special poojas were performed. The famous 'Chinnathambi' elephant which garnered the attention of Tamil Nadu after it was translocated from Coimbatore to Topslip, was also part of the celebration.

The foresters created awareness among the mahouts of maintaining elephants in hygienic conditions. Without tourists, the celebration was a dull affair, the foresters told.
