Coimbatore: The villages of Kaandhavayal, Aalur, Uliyur and Lingapuram have lost connectivity from other villages, towns and cities due to the submerging of a 30-foot high over bridge. They have requested for boat service from the District Administration to avoid dangerous coracle journeys.

The Pillur dam near Mettupalayam received plenty of water flow due to the heavy monsoon rains in Kerala and the Nilgiris this year and filled up. The excess water is released into the Bhavani river which reaches the Bhavani Sagar dam causing it to rise to more than 95 feet.

This caused the 30-foot high over bridge connecting Kaandhavayal and Lingapuram to submerge underwater with water running five feet above the bridge.

As a result of this, areas around the dam including Kaandhavayal, Aalur and Uliyur are surrounded by water. This has cut off traffic flow to and from the villages.

The villagers lamented that the water surrounding the villages has led them to be cut off from other villages, towns and cities and their livelihood has become a question.

The villagers have been undertaking coracle journeys without any kind of safety measures as they have been pushed to transport essentials such as milk, vegetables and LPG cylinders with the help of the coracles. In order to avoid the dangerous coracle journeys, the villagers have requested the District administration to provide them with boat service immediately.
