New and renovated Flower market to commence operations on Independence day

Coimbatore: The Corporation Flower market situated on Mettupalayam road was renovated at a cost of Rs.70 lakhs. Plans have been made to commence the operations of the flower market on Independence Day.

The construction of new shops at the Corporation Flower market on Mettupalayam Road has neared completion with 99% of the construction work done. It has been planned to opened for traders and public from on August 15, 2020 (Independence day).

There are more than 95 shops in the Flower market at RS Puram. More than 20 tonnes of flowers from Bangalore, Dindigul, Sathyamangalam, Sirumugai, Nilgiris and Pollachi are brought to this market for sale.

The flowers are sent not just to other districts but also to other countries. The market that was shut down on March 25 due to the COVID- 19 lockdown commenced operations on May 10.

Usually an overcrowded place, the Poo Market traders failed to observe social distancing norms recommended by the authorities and was sealed on June 19 by the Corporation officials. Following this the 95 shops that were functioning here were shifted to the Devanga School grounds, temporarily.

Amidst this, the Corporation flower market near the old market was renovated at a cost of Rs.70 lakhs and the construction of 95 shops in the market commenced.

Speaking regarding this, a Corporation official said, "The construction of the new shops in the Corporation Flower market is 99% complete. Each shop is six feet by three feet. Shops are built at sufficient intervals. The operations at the Flower market are expected to commence on August 15."
