Solar Panels at Coimbatore's Ukkadam Periya Kulam Boost Power Generation Amid Rising Summer Heat

Coimbatore Corporation's floating solar panel project at Ukkadam Periya Kulam is generating increased electricity due to intense summer heat. The Rs 1.45 crore facility produces 693 units daily, with power generation expected to double during peak summer months of April and May.

Coimbatore: The scorching summer heat in Coimbatore has brought an unexpected benefit - a significant surge in solar power generation from the city's innovative solar panel installations, particularly the floating solar panels at Ukkadam Periya Kulam.

The Coimbatore Corporation has been implementing solar panel projects across the city to augment power generation and offset electricity costs. As part of this initiative, Tamil Nadu's first-ever floating solar panel project was established at Ukkadam Periya Kulam, marking a pioneering step in renewable energy infrastructure.

Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1.45 crore, this floating solar facility has the capacity to generate between 140 and 154 kilowatts of electricity, producing approximately 693 units of power daily. The unique placement on water not only maximizes space utilization but also benefits from the cooling effect of water, which enhances panel efficiency.

In addition to the floating installation, a 3.6 megawatt capacity solar panel system has been installed at Ukkadam Pullukkattu, further strengthening the city's renewable energy portfolio.

Corporation officials explained the strategic importance of these installations: "The primary objective of this project is to meet the Corporation's electricity requirements and reduce power expenses. During summer months, when sunlight is abundant, solar panels can generate substantially more electricity."

The officials noted that total power production typically doubles during the summer season. "With the recent increase in temperature in Coimbatore, electricity generation has been continuously rising. We anticipate further increases in production during April and May," they added.

The floating solar panel system represents an innovative approach to urban renewable energy generation, utilizing water bodies that would otherwise remain unutilized for power production. This technology also helps reduce water evaporation from the pond, providing dual environmental benefits.

As Coimbatore continues to experience intense summer heat, these solar installations are proving their worth by converting the challenging weather conditions into a valuable resource. The Corporation's forward-thinking approach in adopting floating solar technology positions Coimbatore as a leader in sustainable urban energy solutions in Tamil Nadu.

The success of these projects demonstrates the viability of solar energy in urban settings and may serve as a model for other municipalities across the state looking to reduce their carbon footprint while managing electricity costs effectively.
