Coimbatore: A Special Court in Coimbatore dealing with caste atrocity cases has sentenced two men to life imprisonment for attacking a worker with an iron rod and committing caste-based atrocities near Kottur.

The victim, 55-year-old Patteeshwaran from Malaiyandipatinam area in Kottur, belongs to the Scheduled Caste community and works as a coconut scraping worker. On August 24, 2019, after returning home from work, he found two men standing in front of his house.

The two accused, Chandrakumar (34) and Muralidharan (33), both belonging to a different caste and residing in the same locality, were loitering outside Patteeshwaran's residence. When Patteeshwaran questioned why they were unnecessarily standing in front of his house, an argument ensued between them.

During the confrontation, both accused hurled caste-based slurs at Patteeshwaran and attacked him with an iron rod. The brutal assault left Patteeshwaran severely injured, requiring immediate hospitalization. The Kottur police registered a case and arrested both the accused.

The case was heard at the Coimbatore Special Court for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) cases. After examining the evidence and hearing arguments, Judge K Vivekanandan pronounced the verdict on March 25.

The judgment serves as a stern reminder that caste-based discrimination and violence will be dealt with severely under the law.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by members of Scheduled Caste communities and reinforces the importance of stringent legal action against perpetrators of caste-based atrocities.
