Farmer sits on indefinite hunger strike near Palladam; Demands cancellation of quarrying rights for operating quarries in violation of rules

In response to the hunger strike, Government officials including the Revenue Department and the Mineral Resources Department inspected the private stone quarry.

Tirupur: More than 30 stone quarries are functional in Kodangipalayam, Ichipatti and 63 Velampalayam villages in Palladam Taluk of Tirupur District.

A farmer, Vijayakumar, felt that agriculture would be affected by the private stone quarry, crusher and M sand factory operating in Kodangipalayam village.

Vijayakumar opined that his livelihood was being affected and demanded cancellation of the permission of the stone quarry and the setting up of a Special Investigation Team to probe the grant of permission. The aggrieved farmer has reportedly petitioned the district administration repeatedly but no action has been taken thus far.

Following this, farmer Vijayakumar began an indefinite hunger strike on his own land demanding the fulfilment of his demands.

Thereafter, Government officials including the Revenue Department and the Mineral Resources Department inspected the private quarry and then met Vijayakumar.

"An inquiry committee is to be constituted and action will be taken in this regard," reassured the officials who urged the farmer to call off the strike.

Vijayakumar told the Government officials that he would call off the agitation only if the licence of the stone quarry was cancelled and until then his agitation would continue.
