Coonoor heralds in the 'Persimmon' fruit season

Also known as the Adam-Eve fruit and known for its medicinal properties, the 'Persimmon' is sold at a price of upto Rs.170 per kg at the Coonoor fruit station.


During British rule, various types of fruit and flower seedlings including pear, orange, litchi, plums, peaches and lilies were planted in the Nilgiris district. One unique seedling thus planted was the 'Persimmon' which produces the seasonal fruit from September - December.

Clusters of ripe Persimmons hang at an orchard in Sims Park, Coonoor. The Persimmon fruits are available for sale at the Coonoor fruit station. Coonoor Horticulture Assistant Director, Radhakrishnan says, "Persimmon seedlings were brought from Australia in 1952 and planted in the Coonoor Horticulture Farm. It is also known as the Adam-Eve fruit and is known for its medicinal properties. At the Coonoor fruit station, Persimmons are sold at a price of upto Rs.170 per kg.
