Members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party members today protested in front of the Thasildhar office (South) of Coimbatore seeking permission to conduct Jallikattu and Rekla. Former DMK Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy led the protests.
Hundreds of DMK members participated in this protest. The protest garnered the attention of the public widely, as the protestors came in Bullock carts that are used in Rekla race with sugarcane in their hands. The agitated protestors raised slogans against the state and the central government for failing to take concrete steps to facilitate conduct of Jallikattu, the traditional sport of Tamils.
Former Minister, Pongalur N. Palanisamy while speaking to the press stated that, 'Despite the ban, Rekla and Jallikattu will be conducted in the state of Tamil Nadu. The state and the central governments should take necessary steps to seek legal permissions to conduct Jallikattu'.
