Vijayakarthikeyan when speaking to the press said, “The team appointed by the Urban development ministry of the central government to inspect the hygiene standards and open defecation in the cities visited Coimbatore on the 4th and 5th of this month.

All the five zones in the city were inspected for open defecation free status. These places include a slum, school, public area like a market or religious place, residential area and bus stand or railway station.

Based on the observations made, the team submitted a comprehensive report to the officials of the Quality council of India in New Delhi. After scrutinising the reports and the parameters, the Quality Council of India has declared Coimbatore as open defecation free city.

On behalf of the Coimbatore corporation, I whole-heartedly thank all the people of the city who have extended their support for achieving this status. Also, thank the NGO's and social organisations who have supported CCMC's efforts thoroughly. Undeniably, the combined efforts of the people, government organisations, NGO's and CCMC has brought this honor to our city.

And now, after receiving this status, the responsibility of maintaining the status and improving our cleanliness parameters becomes inevitable. Therefore, people of this should inculcate the habit of using toilets to relieve themselves. In the absence of toilets at their homes, people can use the public toilets built by CCMC.

In case of absence of toilets in their wards/areas, the public are free to report to the CCMC office. The officials after due inspection, will initiate steps to build toilet complexes at those places, on priority. As warned, people if found defecating in the open, will attract fine. Maintaining the city in a pristine condition and justifying the tile 'open defecation free city' lies in the hands of the people. Hence, people should co-operate in this regard with the officials and play an crucial role in uplifting the hygiene standards of our city'
