Residents of Uppiliyan Thittu of Ward No:75, led by the Adi Tamilar Peravai today staged a protest before the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) office demanding toilet facilities in their ward.
As a part of the protest, the residents stated that a public toilet in their ward has been over and over filed as petition to the Corporation but till date no action has been taken on it by the officials. Toilet, being one of the crucial basic necessity, denying to fulfill their demands even after repeated pleas is condemnable, they said.
As a part of the protest, the infuriated residents attempted to relieve themselves in front of the corporation office premise. They also stated that, 'Close to 10 lakhs of budget has been sanctioned towards construction of sanitary complex at their ward and still why the officials haven't reacted to it? Even villages are been provided with toilet facilities but our ward which is well within the Corporation limits lack a basic toilet facility'.
When speaking to the press one of the protestors stated, 'Left with no option, we defecate in the open at the railway tracks close to our area. As we do so, the Railways impose fine on us. Why aren't the officials responding to our pleas?'
The Police arrested close to 50 of the protestors as they exhibited disgustful behavior within the CCMC premise. This sudden protest by the residents created tense moments around the CCMC office.
