Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has handled a whopping 20 million passengers so far this year, breaking into the league of top three in the country.
In November alone, the airport handled 2 million passengers. KIA is the first airport in the south and the third in the country to achieve the 20-million-passenger milestone. Delhi and Mumbai airports have recorded more footfalls.
"This reiterates that KIA is one of the fastest growing airports in the country," said a source in Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), the consortium that operates KIA. December - a peak holiday season - is expected to see about 1 million passengers passing through KIA.
"This means the airport is likely to see a passenger traffic of 21.7-22 million by the end of this year," the source added.
In 2015, as many as 18.1 million passengers transited through the airport. Analysts had forecast the annual passenger movement at KIA would touch 26.5 million by 2021. "But the surge is happening at a much faster pace," a BIAL spokesperson said.
