"Visaranai" movie directed by Vetrimaaran which garnered critical acclaim in India and abroad has not made it to the Oscars. "Visaranai" movie was accoladed with various honours at the 63rd National Film Awards, Best Feature Film, Best Supporting Actor for Samuthirakani and Best Editing for Kishore Te.
At the 72nd Venice International Film Festival, the movie won the 'Amnesty International Italia Award'. "Visaranai" movie was also the India’s official entry at the 89th academy awards in Best Foreign Language Film category.
However, it is disappointing to learn that the movie has not progressed to reach the final nominations of the Oscars. Barring the first round of selections, 'Visaranai' failed to get through the final list of nine movies. Undoubtedly, 'Visaranai' is one-of-a class movie delivered by director Vetrimaaran filled with realism and finesse.
The storyline blends around the atrocities by the Police and the unchallenged power they wield. It is to be noted that the movie was based on the novel ‘Lockup’ written by M. Chandrakumar, an auto rickshaw driver in Coimbatore, based on his own life experiences inside the prison. The fact that the story was penned by a person from this city, expectations grew up amongst the citizens of Coimbatore that the movie would grab the prestigious Oscar title.
Starring actors Dinesh, Anandhi, Aadukalam Murugadoss and Samuthirakani , the film was produced by Dhanush’s home banner Wunderbar Productions.
