With New Year's Eve a few weeks away, the Coimbatore City Traffic Police are busy implementing ways and means to contain traffic violations, especially the 'drink and drive'. This year, the traffic police have come out with an enticing way of punishment to those who violate the traffic during the new year's eve.
Speaking exclusively to SimpliCity, Anitha, Assistant Commissioner of Police, South sub-division, shares that in order to ensure the safety of the public and motorists during New Year’s Eve, the Coimbatore Police has plans of introducing a sarcastic way of punishing those who are found guilty of rash driving and also those who are caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
“We have identified about 25 locations in Coimbatore where we will set up temporary tent shelters. Those who are caught by the police for riding or driving rashly or riding or driving under influence of alcohol will be accommodated in those make-shift shelters. Under the tents, entertainment and cultural programmes will be performed, courtesy those found guilty of driving rashly or driving under influence' she said.
She also shares with us that hitherto, the police on duty would chase rash riders and drivers and this can increase the chances of road accidents. However, she is positive that this sarcastic yet innovative way of punishing road rules violators will prove fruitful and eventually reduce the accident rates on the eve.
In order to give this plan a shape, a meeting will be called for on 17th December with several NGOs, who have expressed their willingness to volunteer for this drive. During the meet, the exact protocol for this drive and the number of volunteers required at each tent would be discussed in detail.
This drive is expected to be kick-started on our roads at around 10 pm of 31st December, 2016 and road violators who have found themselves a place under one of the make-shift tents will be let home around 12 am. If all falls in place, the team in each of the make-shift tents has plans of cutting a cake to welcome 2017.
