Karnataka dog unit beats NSG, romps home

Karnataka's dog squad has brought laurels to the state. It emerged victorious at the national counter- explosives competition in New Delhi, with two dogs and three handlers having bagged the best canine and handler awards. It also beat the elite units of National Security Guards (NSG), Border Security Force (BSF) and 28 other teams to be adjudged the best anti-sabotage canine unit.

The two canines - Rupa, a labrador and Jhansi, a German Shepherd- are attached to the Garuda anti-terror unit. Senior police officers said that Agnishaman 2 is a competition organised by the NSG for special units which fight terror activities. The contest focused on the detection of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

According to officers, the contest was challenging for the canines as they are not used to live explosives unlike the dogs in central units. "We use dummy explosives during training. But our canines aced the contest, beating the NSG and BSF squads. It is a proud moment for us," said Bhaskar Rao, additional commissioner of police, crime and technical services.
