Income tax sleuths continued raids on the premises of businessmen in Hubballi and Chitradurga for the second day on Sunday.
On Friday, the Karnataka and Goa wings of the I-T department stumbled upon Rs 5.7 crore in new currency notes in a secret bathroom chamber in the Hubballi house of JD(S) leader KC Veerendra. More than 20 officers are involved in the ongoing raids at five locations in Hubbali and Challakere, said a source in the I-T department.
I-T sleuths had raided the houses of Veerendra, his brother KC Nagaraj, VR Habeeb and Thippeswamy . The seized documents revealed that Veerendra, son-in-law of veteran Kannada actor Doddanna, owns casinos in Goa and was an accused in a cricket betting case. Veerendra's family also owns a few garment factories in Hubballi.
Acting on a tip-off that a hawala operator was involved in the conversion of old notes to bullion, the officers conducted raids at 15 locations. Besides Veerendra's properties, they also conducted raids on jewellery shops in Hubballi. Police in Mysuru seized Rs 22 lakh in Rs 2,000 notes on Saturday.
