BBMP puts out new list of encroachments

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, which restarted its drive against encroachments on storm water drains in the city, has come up with a fresh and comprehensive list of encroachers. The list, which is based on surveys conducted in the past few months by the office of the Joint Director of Land Records under the revenue department, includes 1,570 fresh cases.

Encroachments spread over all eight zones of Bengaluru include 356 residential buildings, 35 commercial industrial establishments, 935 agricultural vacant sites and 244 roads (built by private and government agencies). Mahadevapura zone leads the pack with 761 cases, followed by Yelahanka, Dasarahalli, Bommana Halli, East and others.

While a total of 326 acres of drain space were encroached in the city, in terms of encroached area too, Mahadevapura (170 acres) comes first, with a little less than half the total area encroached, followed by Yelahanka (46 acres), East zone (38 acres) and others.

Chief engineer (storm water drains) Siddegowda told TOI they have uploaded the fresh list of encroachments on the BBMP website. We are calling upon encroachers of properties and land developers to voluntarily remove all such structures, based on the details available on the website. Failure to comply with this appeal will result in forceful removal of all such encroachments and the expenses towards such action will be recovered from the encroachers, realtors or property developers concerned. We will update the list as and when survey work progresses with the deployment of more surveyors," he added.

The demolition drive was halted following a shortage of surveyors and confusion over survey maps. CM Siddaramaiah, at a meeting last week, directed BBMP to restart the exercise and clear all encroachments by February 2017.

Siddegowda said that the encroachment clearance drive will gain pace this week and the Palike is hopeful of meeting the February deadline. "Since August, we've cleared about 240 encroachments. The remaining 1,570 encroachments will be dealt with in coming months," he added.December 16 deadline for hospital The Bengaluru Urban district administration issued a notice to the family of former minister Shamanur Shivashankarappa to vacate the hospital they own in Rajarajeshwari Nagar. The deadline has been set for December 16. Several surveys have established the extent of encroachment. In addition to this property, notices have also been issued to about 40 owners whose properties are found to be encroaching the storm water drain and other government spaces in the area.
