After Nada no-show, new cyclone may skip Tamil Nadu

If Cyclone Nada was a letdown for the city's water managers who hoped for showers in a particularly dry rainy season, a low-weather system that has formed over the Andaman Islands is likely to give them a serious case of heartburn: It is approaching the mainland but heading in a north and northwesterly direction and could give the state a miss altogether. The Met office has forecast light rain in the city on Monday from northeasterly winds that converged over the city after Cyclone Nada weakened.

Area Cyclone Warning Centre director S Balachandran said the low-pressure area is likely to intensify into a deep depression by Tuesday. The system is likely to pass over the Bay of Bengal thereafter.

"After crossing the Bay of Bengal, we expect the system to travel north-west toward the Odisha coast," Skymet Weather chief meteorologist Mahesh Palawat said. "Weather models suggest it could turn into a cyclone but it may not make landfall near Tamil Nadu." "The system is unlikely to be of any benefit to the state," he said. "Even worse, it may weaken the northeasterly winds now blowing over Chennai. This could happen by Tuesday , after which the city will not receive any rainfall until December 11."

The rain has lowered temperatures in Chennai. The met office on Sunday recorded a maximum temperature of 30.5°C and a minimum of 24.6°C.
