20-year-old female elephant found dead at Sirumugai reserve area

Yet another elephant death has been reported today in the district. Yesterday, a 30-year-old male elephant was killed by a speeding passenger train near Walayar.

Today, the forest officials at the Sirumugai reserve forest area were reported about a decomposed carcass of an elephant at Athivatchinampalayam range, Sirumugai.

Manoharan, District forest officer along with Dr. Manoharan, Veterinarian rushed to the spot to investigate the incident. The body parts of the dead animal were removed and sent to Chennai to ascertain the reason for the death. Later, the carcass was buried at the same spot.

Initial examinations reveal that it is a 20-year-old female elephant and could have died out of intestinal infections. The death news of two adult elephants in a span of 24 hours has caused huge concern to the forest officials and environmentalists.
