Today, 26 November is Anti Obesity Day

Way back in 2001, the Indian Wellness brand VLCC, founded by Vandana Luthra, took bold steps to spread the awareness about obesity and its ill-effects. Understanding the importance of this cause, the medical fraternity too joined hands to spread the necessary awareness about this day. Since then on 26 November is observed as Anti-Obesity Day.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), overweight and obesity are the fifth leading risk for global deaths. If numbers provided by the WHO are to be believed, about 2.8 million adults die every year on account of being overweight or obese. Obese people are also prone to high blood pressure, diabetes and heart attacks.

Harini Bala, Nutrition Expert says, “Regular exercise and simple modifications in the daily diet can help a great deal in leading a healthier life. Switching to smarter snacking options, particularly those that enhance satiety, is one such change that one can adopt. Clinical research has shown that almonds have satiating properties that promote feelings of fullness, which may keep hunger at bay between meals, hence making them a perfect, weight-wise snack.”

She further adds, “Adding almonds to the diet as a mid-morning or a mid-evening snack is likely to improve satiety responses in a portion dependent manner leading to appropriate reduction in food intake so that total energy intake over the day is not increased. Also, almonds are nutrient dense with high fibre and protein which accounts for the high satiety value.”

Celebrity Chef Vicky Ratnani says, “I believe successful weight management starts with being mindful at meal and snack times.  Opting for a balanced meal instead of fast food, munching on healthier snacks such as almonds, turning off the TV during meals are all examples where you can practice mindfulness and really focus on the enjoyment of food. In fact, snacking smart with almonds is a great way to start leading a healthy lifestyle.”

So this Anti Obesity Day, make sure to replace unwholesome snacking habits with a handful of almonds and commit to an active lifestyle to see a positive difference in your lives.
