Jail authorities on Friday seized 10 mobile phones in Puzhal prison after a surprise check. The move came following a tiff. While some phones were confiscated from inmates rest were found buried inside the prison premises.
Raids were conducted in the 5th block of the jail where four phones were found. Police said the phones were used to contact associates of some criminals and extort money. Gangs which were involved in the Kannaginagar murder case were among those who had managed to smuggle in the phones.
Police are checking the details of the calls made from the phones. They are probing if any jail official was involved in smuggling in the phones. A case was registered.
