DMK protests against the demonetisation of currency

Thousands of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) members and loyalists participated in a protest against the demonetisation of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 domination currency that was hosted in Coimbatore.

Central government announced the demonetisation of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 currency notes on November 8th. Ever since this announcement was made, people are suffering a lot to obtain the new denomination currency for Rs.2,000. Businesses are suffering and people are queuing up in front of the ATMs and banks to draw cash.

Trade Unions and political parties are hosting protests opposing this move of the Central Government. DMK party in this regard, has called for a state wide protest and human chains are formed by DMK members in various parts across our state.



In Coimbatore, the DMK party members formed a human chain from Najappa Road up to the Cross Cut Road. Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy, led the protests in which DMK cadres from Coimbatore city participated.

When speaking to the press Pongalur Palanisamy said, “People are suffering due to the demonetisation process initiated by the Central Government.  Efforts should be made by the Government to bring the new Rs.500 notes and the Government must also introduce adequate Rs.100 and Rs.50 denominations into circulation.”

The protesters placed a model of a Rs.1,000 note and conducted a funeral procession. Following the protests, the stretch remained tense.
